How do I avoid cliques and office politics at work, without looking like a jerk?

I am an individual and I **** cliques and i **** the favoritism that goes on a work. I know i have to **** it up and deal with it because it’s everywhere, but how can i not lose my sense of identity at work and maintain my dignity, while being polite?

Is it ever okay to talk about politics or religion in the workplace, and if so when?

By politics, I really mean politics and not workplace politics. I’ve always thought it to be improper to talk about these things in the workplace, but my coworkers talk about these things a lot. I try to avoid these topics for the most part, but when people ask my take – when is it okay to talk about these topics?
